Portrait of Cynthia Trench-Gascoigne

WORKING – METHOD Step 2: Portrait of Alvary

p3

Striking similarities of age, hair, attire and informal pose between Arthur and Alvary could make the comparison a game of 'Spot the Difference’.

Subtle changes to the attire of Alvary and obvious changes to the posture ensure the 'personalising’ of Alvary’s portrait; and the integrity of both portraits.

                          COMPOSITION

The Gascoigne Scottish Landscape is viewed
over the shoulder of Alvary. The informal pose
ensures an unrestricted view of the hill-side and
lake features.
The natural setting of the bower is complimented
by Alvary and Laura Gwendolen’s angular profiles
seemlessly fitting the boulders.

1897 Portrait Sittings of Alvary

Hughes was at Lotherton Hall for these sittings. Possible consideration here, Laura Gwendolen’s pregancy with Cynthia; born on 6th February 1898.

Phyllis Braithwaites Reminiscences

Her father’s cousin was employed as the nanny to Cynthia and Alvary and in 1897 dressed,

’the young master in his velvet breeches and shantung silk blouse
for the portrait sittings …. for days he ran in and out of the servants Hall
shouting, 'Have you seen my portrait? Have you seen my portrait?’
to the amusement of all’.
